Near Distance: Utah Landscapes in Interpretation

Near Distance

SLC Airport - Permanent Installation

Near Distance is an expression of humanity - our shared horizon, and our home between the earth and the sky. The work is an interpretation of the stark and sublime landscapes that make up Utah - calming and sculptural, subtle and dramatic, expansive and contained, textured and smooth. The project gathers the horizon into a dense edge, surrounded by a white field that is textured with salt, small imprints of passersby, and seams of contrasting organic charcoal. The composition is punctuated by a series of small geometric rooms that are framed in patinated copper, into which one can project a momentary pause. The suspended horizontal line draws attention to the earth and the sky by defining the edges of both: a point of arrival, of departure, and a place of being.
